We can see several instances that dignifies the importance of lighting of a lamp with oil, ghee & several other oily substances from the period of epic “Mahabharata” & several other ancient Tamil traditional histories. Lighting a lamp with oil in front of the god & goddess is one of the much ancient traditional way of devotional prayer which is being done still now. Several thousand years ago from the period of epic “Mahabharata” the kings who set out for a war had a practice of lighting a lamp in front of the god or goddess before stepping out for war.

“மகாபாரதம்” காலத்திலிருந்தும், பல பண்டைய தமிழ் பாரம்பரிய வரலாறுகளிலிருந்தும் எண்ணெய், நெய் மற்றும் பல எண்ணெய்ப் பொருட்களால் விளக்கேற்றுவதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நாம் பலமுறை காணலாம். கடவுள் மற்றும் தெய்வத்தின் முன் எண்ணெயால் விளக்கேற்றுவது என்பது இன்றுவரை செய்யப்படும் மிகவும் பழமையான பாரம்பரிய பக்தி பிரார்த்தனைகளில் ஒன்றாகும். பல ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, “மகாபாரதம்” காலத்திலிருந்து, போருக்குப் புறப்பட்ட மன்னர்கள், போருக்குப் புறப்படுவதற்கு முன்பு கடவுள் அல்லது தெய்வத்தின் முன் விளக்கேற்றும் பழக்கத்தைக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.
